Headlines Education Centre Kumasi

Here are some photos from the school and different classes.

Ghana Nature

No photos today but we have an outing tomorrow morning so hope to get some more tests for you all back home.

Thought I would share an amazing experience we had today though. Driving back through Kumasi this evening - dusk - and we saw what we thought was an owl fly over. Then there was more and more and then some more. Once we could get a better view we realised they were large bats. The size of a rabbit. There were so many the sky was full, as far as you could see. It was like this for over 15 minutes. Thousands of fruit bats filling the sky. With a full moon behind it looked like the beginning of Scooby Doo.

Could you look up Ghana's bats and let us know what they could have been?

BY DAVID COLEMAN

today was good we went to headlines school and went round there classes first we had 5 mins round them all then we chose a class we went to for an hour me and miss gibb went to the nursery and miss smith went to class six and mike went to J.H.S 2 i took some pictures of mrs gibb teacking the kids i observed today was fun and cant wait to see what tommorow brings.

Kumasi, at last!

Hi there.

Well we made it. A just over 5 hour coach trip between cities - imagine Edinburgh to London - and half the road dug up and laid with sand. Bumpy bumpy to say the least. We were taking bets to see if the 'no road' scenario would be with us all the way but thankfully it was just for an hour or so. We all saw the funny side though and it just added to the experience.

When we got here we were picked up and brought to our new accommodation. A lovely place with air conditioning and TV so David was happy! We were even able to watch Manchester United save a 3-0 thrashing from Chelsea and the following Ghana game in the Africa Cup of Nations. We did actually go out for this and sampled some goat kebab and local hospitality. A fine evening.....then bed.

School this morning and what a place. You will see from the photos the discipline in the kids at their morning assembly. Something which could be transferred back to the UK perhaps? Unfortunately I was mistaken for a teacher and asked to take a lesson in the afternoon. Hmmmm. I think you can all rest peacefully that you won't be getting a new teacher in the near future. It was very hot and I'm sure that had something to do with people nodding off in class. Even the very polite teachers at the back were heading that way. I may even had to stifle a yawn or two!!

Now we have internet we are all able to add to the blog site so prepare for some more additions. Please feel free to comment.......

Ghana Nature 2

Can you tell what they are yet? A test for Mr Pennington's class.

Day 2: Rest day

So, we had a lovely relaxing day today. We went shopping....twice and chilled by the sea.

Shopping 1: Oxford Street. Wow talk about plagued by folk. Mrs Smith tried to get £3.00 off a dress and while she did the rest of us paid various amounts of cash to keep the hawkers at bay. False economy or good fun....you decide.

The sea: hugely rough with an enormous rip tide. Very scary so I got out quick.

Shopping 2: National Cultural Centre. Loads and loads of shacks set up to sell everything to anyone. Mrs Smith and I bought far too much and attempted to spend as little as we could. I think we did ok but you never know.

Dinner was lovely again and we are now all getting ready to travel tomorrow. The adventure continues........
Day 3!  And I'm melting away!  Thank goodness for air conditioning at night.  Amazing day yesterday.  The atmosphere at the Castle was something else.  It took a while to get there, thankfully in an air conditioned car, but we certainly saw life at it's best.  The street markets are incredible, so many people and so much stuff on show. What an experience.  The hotel here is great - good food and of course good company.  We're going off today to see if we can find a market near here, so maybe try some haggling!!
