Ghana Nature

No photos today but we have an outing tomorrow morning so hope to get some more tests for you all back home.

Thought I would share an amazing experience we had today though. Driving back through Kumasi this evening - dusk - and we saw what we thought was an owl fly over. Then there was more and more and then some more. Once we could get a better view we realised they were large bats. The size of a rabbit. There were so many the sky was full, as far as you could see. It was like this for over 15 minutes. Thousands of fruit bats filling the sky. With a full moon behind it looked like the beginning of Scooby Doo.

Could you look up Ghana's bats and let us know what they could have been?

  1. There are 13 species of megabats (fruit bats) In Ghana, almost all of which seem to be found in the Kumasi area. Some of them are relatively small species though and my best guess (without actually having seen them) would be Straw-coloured Bat, or if not that one of the species of Epauletted Bat. Cool sight though (I've only ever seen one, on it's own, in Gambia).
